Savings Goal Calculator

Solve it both ways. Tell it a target and a date and it finds the exact amount to save each month — or tell it what you can save and it shows the balance you'll grow, split into the money you put in versus the interest it earns, in today's dollars too.

Two ways to plan a savings goal

Most savings questions are one of two shapes, and this calculator does both. Reach a goal works backward: you know the number and the date, and you want the monthly amount that gets you there. Grow what I save works forward: you know what you can set aside, and you want to see the balance it becomes — and, if you've set a goal, the month you'd cross it.

Either way, the answer leans on compounding, and the calculator shows where the total comes from:

  • Money you put in: your starting balance plus every monthly contribution.
  • Interest it earns: the APY compounding monthly on a balance that keeps growing — the part you didn't have to save yourself.

It also keeps you honest about inflation: a second line tracks your balance in today's dollars, so a five-figure goal years out doesn't quietly overstate what it'll actually buy. You can model an annual step-up as your income grows, and switch between a tax-free account (Roth or HSA-style) and a taxable one, where interest is trimmed by your marginal rate.

Common questions

How much do I need to save each month to reach my goal?
Enter the goal, your current balance, the date you want to hit it, and the APY you'll earn. The calculator solves the level monthly amount that lands you exactly on target — and because your balance earns interest along the way, that amount is lower than just splitting the gap evenly across the months.
How much of the total is contributions versus interest?
It splits the ending balance into money you put in versus interest it earned, shown as a bar. Over a few years most of the total is your own contributions; stretch the timeline and the compounding share grows — that's the case for starting early.
Does it handle inflation and taxes?
Yes. A second line shows your balance in today's dollars, deflated by the inflation rate you choose. For a taxable account it trims the APY by your marginal rate; a Roth or HSA-style account compounds the full APY untaxed. Both are simplifications — real taxes and inflation move around — but they keep the headline number honest.
Is anything saved or sent anywhere?
No. Every number runs in your browser. Nothing you type is uploaded, stored, or shared — and you can export the full month-by-month schedule to CSV with one click.

Knowing the number is step one

Taly auto-splits every paycheck across your goals — so the amount you need to save each month gets set aside on its own, before you can spend it. Your paycheck does the math.
