What net worth really tells you
Net worth is the oldest, simplest measure of financial health: everything you own minus everything you owe. Tally your assets — cash, investments, retirement accounts, your home, your vehicles — then subtract your liabilities — mortgage, auto loans, student loans, credit cards. The difference is your net worth, and it's perfectly normal for it to be negative for a stretch.
But the headline number hides as much as it reveals, so this calculator pulls apart two things it usually glosses over:
- Liquid vs. illiquid: a $300k net worth that's all home equity can't pay a hospital bill. Your liquid net worth — cash and investments minus debt — is the part you could actually reach in a pinch.
- Debt-to-asset ratio: how leveraged you are. A smaller, low-debt net worth is often sturdier than a bigger one built on borrowed money.
It also offers an optional benchmark — the old age × income ÷ 10 rule of thumb — but treats it gently: it's context, not a target, and it quietly punishes the young and the high-earning. The point of the tool isn't a grade. It's an honest picture of what you've built and what you could actually use.
Common questions
- What counts as an asset vs. a liability?
- An asset is anything you own that has value — cash, savings, investment and retirement accounts, your home, your vehicles, and other valuables. A liability is anything you owe — your mortgage, auto and student loans, credit-card balances, and any other debt. Net worth is the first total minus the second.
- Why does liquid net worth matter more than total net worth?
- Because you can't spend a house. Liquid net worth counts only what you could convert to cash quickly — cash and investments — minus your debts. If most of your net worth is locked in home equity, your liquid net worth can be small even when the headline number looks great, and that's what determines how you'd handle an emergency.
- Is anything saved or sent anywhere?
- No. Every number runs in your browser. Nothing you type is uploaded, stored, or shared — and you can export your full breakdown to CSV with one click.
